World Cultural and Natural Heritage
We are surrounded by sites which say something about what it is and what it has been to be human through history; sites which sum up experiences and provide the basis for creating a better future. Some of the sites are of such major significance that losing them would be an irreplaceable loss for the whole of mankind. The world therefore has a shared responsibility to take care of these irreplaceable sites for future generations. This is laid down in UNESCO’s Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

Greenland & World Heritage
The Greenland National Museum has for the UNESCO World Heritage List selected culturally significant historical objects and the Institute of Nature pointed out areas of special interest for the natural environment.

Norway’s Heritage
Norway ratified the Convention on 12 May 1977 and had its first two sites recognised by 1979: Bryggen, the old wharf in Bergen and Urnes Stave Church. The following year saw the nomination of the mountain town Røros approved. It then took five years for the rock drawings in Alta to be recognised in 1985.

The World Heritage List
There is at the moment 788 listed sites (611 cultural sites, 154 natural sites and 23 mixed sites) inscribed on the World Heritage List.

World Heritage Sites Sweden
A World Heritage Site is a cultural or natural monument which is so valuable that it is a matter for the whole of humanity. It is a place, area, environment or object which uniquely represents the history of the Earth and of mankind. Once something is entered on the prestigious list of World Heritage Sites, it is guaranteed protection and care for all time. Sweden has twelve World Heritage Sites.

World Heritage Sites in Finland
There are 5 World Heritage Sites in Finland: The Fortress of Suomenlinna, Old Rauma, Petäjävesi Old Church, Verla Groundwood and Board Mill, and The archaeological site of Sammallahdenmäki. More information on the web site of The National Board of Antiquities.

The Adventure in Suomenlinna
